Welcome
In the EDGElab, we explore the interactions between microorganisms and their habitats, specifically in ecosystems that present environmental challenges, and life at 'edges'. The edges between ecosystems or biomes offer unique views into how life operates in such habitats. These habitats include (but are not limited to), hydrothermal systems, high and low pH systems, systems that access the "deep, dark biosphere," and processes of biomineralization (biofilms, microbialites, microbial mats). New efforts are exploring relationships between microbes and local soil environments, and the impact of human activity on them. Edges in these contexts could include a boundary between chemosynthetic and photosynthetic zones of a hot spring, a place where the subsurface biosphere intersects the surface biosphere, or a more literal edge between a protected habitat and the outside world. We also think about Astrobiology and life in Early Earth environments, and how these relate to life on current Earth, and the role that extremophiles and polyextremophiles might have.
